In northern Hungary, the Sauska Tokaj winery makes its famously sweet vintages even sweeter by providing spectacular panoramic views with every sip. This sprawling 63,000-square-foot complex, designed by Budapest-based Bord Architectural Studio, buries its viticulture operations beneath tasting and dining areas to minimize the structure’s visual footprint on the surrounding UNESCO World Heritage–listed region. “What I create should not touch the untouchable,” says studio founder Péter Bordás of the two saucer-shaped structures that seem to float above the vineyards. With limestone-paved terraces and tilted green roofs that echo the sloping terrain, Sauska Tokaj harmonizes its striking form with an undulating, sun-soaked landscape.
