“We were trying to create a piece of architecture, a sculpture, that would rise to the level of the world's best tennis player, Serena Williams, and her expectations. You have product design and merchandising, which are essentially the core of the company, all housed in one building that’s a beehive of activity. I remember being at your office, Jeff, and we started sketching sort of iconic monuments and thinking: ‘Could this be in the state of Oregon?’ And we had talked about the handshake between Bill and Phil—Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight, our co-founders. It was the handshake that basically built Nike. Jeff turned that handshake into the marriage of the project’s towers. The completed building that you see is a watershed moment not just for Nike but for the region.”
