Renovation, Restoration & Adaptive Reuse: 2026

Everything old is new again with our February focus on renovation, restoration, and adaptive reuse. We visit four buildings that have each undergone a striking metamorphosis: an 1980s-era concrete warehouse in Bangkok repurposed into Thailand’s first international contemporary art museum; an erstwhile Manhattan health center—and before that, a YWCA dormitory dating back to 1891—transformed into a posh boutique hotel and social club with a striking restored facade; a Brutalist junior high school in Geneva that has been cleverly restored and enlarged, complete with a concrete-clad timber addition; and a landmark Midwestern symphony hall celebrating its centennial with a grand new lobby and back-of-house extension.
