The British designer and Dr. Dre highlighted notable architectural landmarks including the Compton Courthouse and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial of Harold Williams's 1977 Compton Civic Center.
The initiative—launched last November by the mayor’s office, along with the city’s chief design officer, Christopher Hawthorne—drew nearly 400 responses worldwide.
Architects look at transforming the ubiquitous roadside facilities, some of which have already been
converted to coffee shops, fast-food restaurants, or even hair salons.
